Profile

Silken Laumann is one of Canada's most inspirational leaders and a highly recognizable and beloved athlete. At 18, she qualified for the National Rowing Team and just one year later she won a bronze medal at the Summer Olympics in L.A. A gold medal followed at the Pan American Games in 1987 and, in 1991, Silken became rowing's world champion. She was the firm favourite for gold at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona but only 10 weeks prior to the Games another rowing skull cut across her path, shredding muscles and breaking bones in her leg. Her injury was so severe that doctors doubted she would row again. Within 10 days, there were five operations and, dogged with determination, she was back in her rowing shell just 27 days later, winning a bronze medal. She subsequently won a silver medal at the Atlanta Olympic Games in 1996 and was inducted into Canada's Sports Hall of Fame in 1998.

Silken is the Canadian ambassador to “Right to Play,” a program dedicated to reintroducing play into the lives of children in refugee camps.

  • PHYSICAL ACTIVITY: THE POWER OF PLAY – CHILD’S PLAY AND SILKEN’S ACTIVE KIDS Movement
    • In this presentation Silken Laumann brings the same dedication, passion and integrity for which she is known, to the important area of child health. She re-connects audiences with their fondest childhood memories of play: staying outside until that final call for dinner, neighbourhoodwide games of Capture-the-flag and road hockey marathons. But the world has changed, we have forgotten the importance of unstructured play and our children are paying a tragic price for the recent shifts in our society. The Power of Play to change lives and build community. The importance of healthy role models and the value of contributing back to society.
Silken’s Active Kids Movement exists to inspire, support and connect a Community Action Network of champions.
