Juno Award-Winning Jazz Musician
Paul’s distinct style permeates the Toronto jazz scene.
Paul Neufeld is a composer, keyboardist and sousaphone player with a wide range of interests and influences that all make their way into his music. Winner of the 1996 Juno Award for best contemporary jazz album with his group NOJO, Paul is a four-time Juno nominee and the winner of the 2001 National Jazz Award for best big band. He has produced four CDs with NOJO, two with his Rhythm & Truth Brass Band and one with the Paul Neufeld Group. Entitled Walk Together, it is based on 19th century African-American spirituals.
Paul has also received commissions from orchestras, written music for TV and film, and has served as arranger and side musician on many CD and live projects for other artists. His work with a number of bands, including the funky electric quartet, Rivethead, hard driving sousaphone-powered Rhythm & Truth, the New Orleans sound of Suitcase Brass, and his more commercial work in GrooveYard, showcases his musical versatility.
The Globe and Mail refers to some of Paul’s Jazz arrangements as “vivid, ruggedly rhythmic and altogether dangerous.”
