Paul Bates

A Certified Management Accountant (CMA), Dean Paul Bates has been a leader and educator in the Canadian business community for more than two decades. He is currently serving his second term as Dean and Industry Professor in Financial Management Services at the DeGroote School of Business at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario; the first Dean in its 42 year history to serve a second term. Dean Bates also serves as a member of the Board of Governors at McMaster University. As a former Adjunct Professor at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management, he was awarded an Outstanding Teacher Award in 2003 and again in 2004. Dean Bates recently completed a second edition of his best-selling book, Sales Force Management in the Financial Services.

Following service on the boards of the Toronto Stock Exchange and the Canadian Investment Dealers Association, in 2003 Dean Bates was appointed as a part-time commissioner to the Ontario Securities Commission; he will complete his second and final term on June 10th2009. He also chairs the Investor Education Fund (www.investored.ca). Bates has held the president’s office at four major brokerage and investment firms, most recently at the helm of Charles Schwab Canada (later acquired by Bank of Nova Scotia). His experience includes executive management in established firms and also successful “di novo” start ups.

In 2000, he was recognized by his peers when he was chosen as the Most Influential Broker of the Year by Investment Executive Magazine. In 2002, Bates was awarded the Queen’s Jubilee Medal for community service. This commemorative medal is awarded to Canadians who, over the past 50 years, have helped create the Canada of today.

In January 2008 Dean Bates was appointed to a three year term to the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC).

Bates calculates that he has run the circumference of the planet, including the completion of 10 Marathons and the Hamilton Around the Bay Road Race. An experienced sailor, he now lives on an equestrian farm with Sally, his wife of 40 years.
