Award-Winning Syndicated Journalist, Military Historian and Broadcaster
Informed, intelligent viewpoints delivered in a cogent, no-nonsense manner.

Gwynne Dyer has worked as a freelance journalist, columnist, broadcaster and lecturer on international affairs for more than 20 years, but he was originally trained as an historian. Born in Newfoundland in 1943, he received degrees from Canadian, American and British universities, finishing with a Ph.D. in military and Middle Eastern history from the University of London. He held academic appointments at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and at Oxford University before giving up day jobs in 1973. Since then, he has maintained his twice-weekly column on international affairs, which is published in 175 papers in 45 countries and translated into more than a dozen languages. Gwynne's first television series, the seven-part documentary War, was nominated for an Academy Award. An accompanying book, also titled War, won a Columbia University School of Journalism award in 1986.
In 1990 Dyer co-wrote The Defence of Canada: In the Arms of the Empire with Tina Viljoen. His most recent book, Ignorant Armies: Sliding Into War in Iraq, sheds much-needed light on the connections between Al-Qaeda and the war on Iraq.
"Your documentation of the changing face of our customers was extremely thought provoking and relevant to our consideration of strategy at CIBC. I received very positive feedback from the Directors concerning the session – which reflects very well on the quality of speakers that we chose to challenge them" CIBC
