Survivor of a Random Act of Violence
Inspirational message delivered with integrity, humour and courage.

Barbara Turnbull is a Canadian journalist who has risen above the random and unprovoked act of violence that changed her life and horrified an entire country. Barbara’s is the story of an 18-year-old schoolgirl who was working at a convenience store in Toronto when she was gunned down during a robbery and rendered a quadriplegic. Like her friends Rick Hansen and Christopher Reeve, Barbara is committed to raising money for spinal cord research.
In 1997 she created the Barbara Turnbull Foundation for Spinal Cord Research, believing that research is the answer to getting people confined to a life on wheels back on their feet. The foundation has created a major award in support of spinal cord research in the amount of $50,000, given annually in conjunction with NeuroScience Canada. Barbara is a council member of the Robarts Research Institute for medical research programs and honorary co-chair of the University Health Network, which supports the Rick Hansen Wheels in Motion initiative. She is author of Looking in the Mirror, an autobiographical account.
“Barbara uses integrity and tremendous humour to deliver messages that motivate and inspire audiences of all sizes.” Canadian Health Care Executive
